The Miracle of Green Tea

"Better to be deprived of food for three days, than tea for one."
(Ancient Chinese Proverb)

Is any other food or drink reported to have as many health benefits as green tea?

The Chinese have known about the medicinal benefits of green tea since ancient times, using it to treat everything from headaches to depression. In her book Green Tea: The Natural Secret for a Healthier Life, Nadine Taylor states that green tea has been used as a medicine in China for at least 4,000 years.

Today, scientific research in both Asia and the west is providing hard evidence for the health benefits long associated with drinking green tea. For example, in 1994 the Journal of the National Cancer Institute published the results of an epidemiological study indicating that drinking green tea reduced the risk of esophageal cancer in Chinese men and women by nearly sixty percent. University of Purdue researchers recently concluded that a compound in green tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells. There is also research indicating that drinking green tea lowers total cholesterol levels, as well as improving the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol to bad (LDL) cholesterol.

To sum up, here are just a few medical conditions in which drinking green tea is reputed to be helpful:

cancer
rheumatoid arthritis
high cholesterol levels
cariovascular disease
infection
impaired immune function

What makes green tea so special?
The secret of green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant: besides inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, it kills cancer cells without harming healthy tissue. It has also been effective in lowering LDL cholesterol levels, and inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots. The latter takes on added importance when you consider that thrombosis (the formation of abnormal blood clots) is the leading cause of heart attacks and stroke.
Links are being made between the effects of drinking green tea and the "French Paradox." For years, researchers were puzzled by the fact that, despite consuming a diet rich in fat, the French have a lower incidence of heart disease than Americans. The answer was found to lie in red wine, which contains resveratrol, a polyphenol that limits the negative effects of smoking and a fatty diet. In a 1997 study, researchers from the University of Kansas determined that EGCG is twice as powerful as resveratrol, which may explain why the rate of heart disease among Japanese men is quite low, even though approximately seventy-five percent are smokers.

Why don't other Chinese teas have similar health-giving properties? Green, oolong, and black teas all come from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. What sets green tea apart is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in preventing and fighting various diseases.

Other Benefits
New evidence is emerging that green tea can even help dieters. In November, 1999, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the results of a study at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Researchers found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.
Green tea can even help prevent tooth decay! Just as its bacteria-destroying abilities can help prevent food poisoning, it can also kill the bacteria that causes dental plaque. Meanwhile, skin preparations containing green tea - from deodorants to creams - are starting to appear on the market.

Harmful Effects?
To date, the only negative side effect reported from drinking green tea is insomnia due to the fact that it contains caffeine. However, green tea contains less caffeine than coffee: there are approximately thirty to sixty mg. of caffeine in six - eight ounces of tea, compared to over one-hundred mg. in eight ounces of coffee.

russians, indians & filipinos celebrates christmas together

we celebrated christmas in ate gemma's house, that's (left to right) nikolai, sajeesh, tito ricky, bambi & me, ate gem, ate tina, evgeniya & sergey.

nikolai, sergey and tito ricky are the IT Dept, evgeniya is sergey's wife, sajeesh is one of the accountants, ate gemma is the exec. secretary, ate tina is one of the marketing executives, & bambi and me... we're the saling-pusa hahaha! no, actually we're the creative dept... just the two of us.

we're planning a different trip this new year... that should be a blast...

the irony of life

i was thinking these past few days... if we were to go for a vacation next year, will we be giving ourselves a break from the ever-looming loneliness of homesickness, or we're just giving ourselves more reason to me homesick by the time we'll go back to work.

kuya jun told me... never go home if you're homesick. it will be worse when you come back.

it seems weird, when i think of it, if we'll eat somewhere, like, in filinvest, and we see everyone, having all the time in the world to eat and stroll, i think i'll feel weird that they take their lives for granted, when they are living what i've been dreaming... for the past 2 years.

i will never have time to sleep once i go back to manila. i will go to all the places i've missed, ride the jeep, smell the smoke, eat isaws, go to provinces, talk to people, and shop, shop, shop.

but each day that i'll wake up there, i will be counting the days left for me to stay. isn't it weird that 30 days seems so short for me, that in 30 days i'll be away again, dreaming again... when everyone is just living it their whole lives?

everyday i want to scream. and every night i have to dream. i want to fast-forward my life up to the point where we've saved enough. then we can go back to the place where we belong.

as much as i appreciate life, it seems pretty stupid that i think im wasting it here... counting days, or years... not actually living, just working, working, working, so i can live again.

if bambi isn't here, i think i'll be crazy sooner than what i've expected. here where i can't appreciate the prettiest of gardens, the everlasting rays of sunshine. everything has no life, no meaning.

you will never understand me until you work abroad. away from almost everything you cherish, almost everything that makes you happy. when that almost everything means your life.

ps. almost everything because i have bambi here. and maybe it's him that makes it bearable for me to stay one more day, one day at a time.

fresh from a 4-day holiday

wow, would you believe them? the (supposedly) 2-day holiday strikes on weekends, and they adjusted it to the weekdays!!! so that totals a four-day-yes-bambi-is double-paid-holiday!!! this is my kind of i-work-in-this city hehe...

ps. my kind of working-in-this-city doesn't mean my kind of place.

-----

as of me, i just slept most of the day and read bambi's enormous magazine collection at night. it has different categories now: home, computer, entertainment, photographic, educational and transportation. papa's old cabinet is swaying at their weight!

-----

i don't know what's in kuya ricky's mind. i told him to bring with him something that i would like to send to manila when he goes home at the end of this month, and he says he'll just give me money to send it by courier. would you believe the totally-most-frugal person in the world giving me money instead of just bringing with him a small package? strange things happens to some nerds nowadays... he's a kind nerd though.

----

it's 20 today... and until now i still don't know what day Christmas will fall this year, is it Sunday or Saturday.... gosh i was so busy i can't even look at calendars anymore...

----

i'll add YP's blog in my links but i will not add mine to theirs (what?!? with all the swearing here?), i'm still not finished but they cancelled their newsletter so mafi mushkila with that. (haha! the only phrase i know with two years in my belt, and bambi can proudly converse already when he's been here only a year and 3 months!)

----

need more bling-bling... my IM is screaming with offline messages again. these people, give me alife, will ya? we just bought a videocam because its the first time we were able to sent all of you money and still have some on our pockets, but when i give you some, you still want more! i'm working my butts off just to have extra moolah, you're not helping me at all...

the sad part is, even if i give you my all, its still not enough... and im still to blame if you "strayed" your way just because i wasn't able to send some... im still the one who gets blamed if you can't do something without it.... is there some fairness in the world???

-----

merry christmas everyone! i'll try to post some avi's of our christmas if i can, i just have to figure it out first hehe....

ATTENTION PEOPLE OF THE PHILIPPINES!

ive been asking for photos FOR AGES na, wala pa rin ba? kumusta na si shasha? si kc at si natnat, ano ba yan, palibhasa magkakasama kayo dyan eh....

hah!!! naalala ko, panaginip ko pala nung isang araw (2nd day of holiday)...

nagising daw ako bigla, tapos sumilip ako sa bintana, tanghali na. dito yon sa bintana sa kwarto namin... the weird thing is, habang nakasilip ako, nag iisip ako, "ano ba yan, nasayang na umaga ko, ilang araw na lang ako dito e... kailangan ko nang pumunta ng filinvest (haha! imagine thinking of filinvest when i was staring from our bedroom here)" and then naisip ko wala na pala akong pera, naubos na yung 8 thousand ko, so naisip ko uli "alam ko na, hihingi ako kay papa"

and then lumabas na ko ng kuwarto, nakita ko sila eyang at yves, pagpunta ko sa banyo, walang tubig sa drum (huh!?! there isn't exactly a drum in our toilet here) so kumuha ako ng hose para malagyan ng tubig yung drum.

and then nagising na ko.

puddles everywhere

it's been raining for 2 days straight now.

that's weird, considering ot only rains twice a year here, one in the end of summer, and one at the end of winter, marking the end of season. but this year it rained almost 6 times already, its getting harder and harder to get up in the morning.

but the hardest thing to do in the morning is taking a bath. just be out of the hot shower in two seconds and you'll be shivering in the cold. buying the rain jacket last week is a blessing, it was soooo cold walking from home to the office and vice versa before, especially if i have to go back at night to finish the results posters...

yesterday the streetlights were on at 4 pm... it was dark enough like 6 o'clock summer day. made me miss the manila rains...

did i tell you that shaima described me as "tasty" last week ("she's very tasty")? when i asked her what she meant she said it means i have a nice taste, lolz! but that was nice of her, appreciating my artwork and all, everytime she sees me after a project she says"tintin, they love it, they love it, they love it so much! they don't know what to pick!!!"

i guess this job has its perks anyways, especially if i can go out to take pictures of clients, or when they give me a tip (don vito gave me a BD10 tip this month)!!! yep, i think i'm beginning to like this job...

last night at 9 pm bambi just got his video cam, he was all-smiles like a little kid given a wonderful present. we've been ogling at videocams for months before we had the chance to buy, guess we are so blessed this month considering we sent all three parties (my father, my siblings, and his family) christmas money already, and we were still able to buy a videocam. its recording on cassette tape, but the cool thing is it has usb connection and you can write your recordings on a vcd! im still not through the manual, i was so sleepy last night i only lasted til page 30-something...

ok, i have to go back to work now, im posting in the office hehe!
